Microsoft to End Password Support in Authenticator App by August 2025

Microsoft has announced that it will officially end support for saved passwords in its Authenticator app starting August 1, 2025. Additionally, the app’s autofill feature will stop working in July 2025, marking a significant step in the company’s move toward a passwordless future.

This change is part of a broader effort to improve security and simplify the user experience. Microsoft is shifting its focus to stronger authentication methods like passkeys, Windows Hello, and FIDO2-based login, which offer better protection against phishing, credential theft, and password reuse—still among the most common causes of data breaches.

As of last month, users can no longer add or import new passwords into the Authenticator app. Existing passwords will continue to work until July, but after August 1, 2025, all saved passwords will be removed and any unsaved, generated passwords will be permanently deleted.

It’s important to note that passkey functionality will not be affected. Users with passkeys linked to their Microsoft accounts must keep Authenticator enabled, as disabling the app will also disable access to passkeys.

Microsoft recommends that users transition to a dedicated password manager such as Microsoft Edge, Google Password Manager, Apple iCloud Keychain, or Bitwarden. These tools offer secure syncing across devices, encrypted backups, and biometric login support. If you’ve been using Authenticator primarily for autofill or password storage, now is a good time to export your saved passwords and set up a new manager as your default autofill tool.

While the change may require a few extra steps now, it's designed to strengthen your digital security in the long run.
