Mexican Cybercriminal Unleashes Android Malware, Posing a Threat to Global Banking Industry
Mexican Hacker Strikes Global Banks with Android Malware: Spanish and Chilean Institutions Main Targets
Between June 2021 and April 2023, a cybercriminal hailing from Mexico has been identified as the mastermind behind a widespread Android mobile malware campaign aimed at financial organizations worldwide. While the primary focus of this operation has been on Spanish and Chilean banks, other institutions have also fallen victim to the attack.
Known as Neo_Net, the perpetrator has garnered attention from security researcher Pol Thill, whose findings were recently published by SentinelOne in collaboration with vx-underground for the Malware Research Challenge.
Despite employing relatively basic tools, Neo_Net has achieved remarkable success rates by customizing its infrastructure to suit specific targets. Their actions have resulted in the theft of over 350,000 EUR from targeted victims' bank accounts, along with the compromise of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) for thousands of individuals.
Prominent financial institutions such as Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank, Deutsche Bank, Crédit Agricole, and ING have been among the primary targets of this nefarious operation.
