Messaging Platforms Strengthen Scam Protection Tools

Meta is adding new features to protect users of Messenger and WhatsApp from scams. On WhatsApp, users get a warning before sharing their screen with unknown people during video calls to avoid sharing private info. On Messenger, there’s a “Scam detection” setting that alerts users about suspicious messages from strangers. If users choose, they can send messages to an AI for review, which helps find scams but means those messages aren’t fully private anymore. If a scam is detected, users get advice on common tricks like fake jobs asking for money and can block or report scammers.

Meta also said it shut down over 21,000 fake Facebook pages and nearly 8 million scam accounts on Facebook and Instagram linked to crime groups around the world. Many scams involve “romance baiting,” where criminals pretend to be romantic partners to trick victims into investing money in fake crypto platforms. These scammers build trust through dating apps or social media, then disappear with the victims’ money. Experts warn these scams use emotional manipulation to fool people into losing large amounts of money.
