Phishing, Ransomware, and AI Fraud Fuel Rising Cyber Threats in Asia-Pacific
A new INTERPOL report shows that cybercrime is rising quickly across Asia and the South Pacific. This increase is linked to the growing use of digital technology, the internet, and new tools such as artificial intelligence (AI). Phishing remains the most common type of cybercrime, while ransomware attacks, fake videos and images (deepfakes), and online scams are also becoming more common. In 2024, the region recorded more than 135,000 ransomware attacks, affecting businesses in industries such as real estate, manufacturing, and finance.
The report also found that organized crime groups in countries like Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines are running large scam operations that target people around the world. These groups often use fake investment offers, online relationships, and AI-generated content to trick victims into sending money. To fight these threats, INTERPOL and law enforcement agencies are working together more closely through joint operations, information sharing, training, and stronger cybersecurity efforts.
