Working Remotely Also Poses Risks

Due to their portability, laptops are relatively easy to steal. You should always keep your laptop close and bring it with you when working in a public setting. When traveling, it is best to keep your electronics in your carry-on bag rather than in your checked luggage. This advice also applies to external hard drives and USB flash drives, which are both types of data storage. It can be challenging to determine with certainty what potentially sensitive information was on a lost or stolen...

Wherever You Are, Lock Your Device

It's easy to let your guard down when working in the comfort of your own home or office. To prevent inadvertent data loss or leakage, you should still maintain the habit of locking your computer when you're not using it. All it takes is a moment of carelessness for a family member, co-worker, or malicious individual to accidentally or intentionally cause damage or access critical information they are not authorized to see.

Cyber Criminals Can Invade Social Media Platforms

Cybercriminals also use social media platforms to perform their attacks. To ensure our safety, we must be on the lookout for social media fraud such as solicitations for personal information or phony freebies. These frauds can result in identity theft or monetary loss. Always think twice and don’t click on links that look malicious from an untrusted sender.

Create Unique Passwords for Each Account

It's important to protect your passwords. If you suspect that your password has been compromised, change it immediately. Your password may be compromised if you experience multiple sign-in failures on your account, if someone else accesses another account that uses the same or a similar password, or if you notice any unusual activity on your account. If your password has been compromised, all the data associated with it may also be compromised. It's crucial to change your password if you...

Never Be A Victim of Spear Phishing

Spear phishers use manipulative emails to target specific individuals, hoping to deceive them into disclosing sensitive information or infecting their computers with malware. These attackers often request personal or confidential information, or they may attempt to deceive you into installing malicious software by clicking on a link or opening an attachment. It is important to always be cautious of emails, even if they seem to come from a trusted source. When in doubt, consider calling the...

Your Workstation, Your Responsibility

Your computer or mobile device could potentially be infected with malware by anyone who has access to it. Never allow family or friends to use your workstation computer or devices, as they may unwittingly introduce malware, particularly young children. If this happens, all of the data on the computer or device may be compromised.

It's also essential to be cautious if you're considering setting up a guest account or another account for them to use. Even if you do this, it's best not...

Never Click Links on Unknown Emails

To check if your email account is active, spam emails may use the "unsubscribe" feature. Don't remove your name from mailing lists that you didn't join, as you might be prompted to opt out of receiving spam emails. Clicking on the unsubscribe link can possibly redirect you to malware. Moreover, the spammer may use your response to ascertain that your email account is active and continue sending you spam messages, or even sell your email address to another spammer. When you receive...

"Password-Protected" Does Not Imply Security

Proceed with caution when accessing email attachments, especially password-protected ZIP files. Malicious software or malware may be contained in email attachments. Since a virus scanner may not be able to automatically scan the ZIP file's contents, it's important to take precautions. Before opening any email attachment, make sure you know and trust the sender to protect yourself. Never activate macros in email attachments. The macro, not the email attachment, may pose a real...

Never Use Suspicious Drives

Any information assets you find—like USB drives—should be surrendered immediately. Never plug them into your workstation. These allegedly "lost" files and devices might contain false information or harmful software that could infect your computer and the network with spyware, which would allow for network eavesdropping or other forms of malware.
